Sweet Nothings and Stinky Feet
Marriage isn’t all Instagram smiles, date nights, and long romantic talks. It’s messy. It’s dirty. Sometimes it stinks. In John 13, when Jesus got on His knees and washed feet, He showed us exactly how to handle the mess, the dirt, and the stink. He gave us the survival manual for two sinners living under the same roof.
Think about it… The King of the universe wrapped Himself in a towel and washed the feet of men who would soon betray Him, deny Him, and run from Him. If anyone had the right to sit back and demand service, it was Jesus. Instead, He got on His knees and did the work of a servant. Why? To show us that greatness in His kingdom is not built on entitlement, but a towel.
When we apply that to marriage, we learn some heavy truths. Husbands, you’re not the boss barking orders while your wife scrubs the dirt of life off your soul. Wives, you’re not the queen demanding your man bow at your throne. Both of you are called to kneel. Both of you are called to serve. Marriage isn’t about who’s in charge… it’s about washing feet.
Ephesians 5 tells husbands to love their wives like Christ loved the church. That means bleeding, sweating, sacrificing, and yes, sometimes washing the filth of another’s sin and weakness without complaint. Wives are called to respect and obey their husbands in that same spirit of humility. The whole framework of biblical marriage is mutual, gritty service built on the foundation of the cross and demonstrated in a basin of dirty water.
And for young people itching to get married... If you’re not ready to wash feet, you’re not ready for a wedding. Don’t walk down that aisle thinking it’s all about romance and fairy tales. The honeymoon glow fades fast, and what you’re left with is the daily grind of serving someone else when they don’t deserve it, when they’re difficult, when they’re downright unlovable. That’s marriage. It’s glorious, but it’s also bloody, sweaty, humble service. If you can’t kneel, don’t vow.
If you want a godly marriage, be ready to wash feet. Be ready to kneel when your pride screams to stand tall. Be ready to serve when your flesh craves to be served. Be ready to love when it costs you. That’s the gospel in marriage. That’s Jesus in your home.
Because at the end of the day, marriage isn’t about looking good. It’s about looking like Christ… and Christ had dirty hands from washing dirty feet.
